Introductory note

The Greek Shadow Theatre constituted a significant source of inspiration. The personal figure and poster creations of Karagkiosopektes and those professional painters to whom these works were assigned, brought to light impressive art richness. All this material inspired many of the most important representatives of the New Greek painting, such as:

a) Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989) who, since the beginning of his career in 1930, was greatly influenced by the shadow theatre through the posters of Dedousaros and S. Spatharis.

b) Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, who was in charge of the scenery and costumes of the famous performance “Karagkiotis and the Cursed Serpent” of the “Greek Ballet” (1950).

c) Other known Greek painters: Giorgos Sikeliotis, Giannis Migadis, Minos Argirakis, Bost and others.

d) A lot of new painters like Tasos Mantzabinos, Konstantinos Kougioumtzis, Marina Petri, Dinos Papaspyrou and others. They all produced an important series of works having the characters of the Greek Shadow Theatre and their adventures as a theme.

e) Cartoonists: For obvious reasons, the field of cartoons used widely the figure of the Karagkiozis (the theme about the Cartoon is studied in a separated thematic unit).
